Vermont senator Bernie Sanders criticized Israel’s decision to cut off electricity, fuel, food and water to Gaza Strip residents, calling it a serious violation of international law.
Sanders accused Israel of targeting civilians by denying them food and water. “It will do nothing but harm innocent civilians,” Sanders said.
Sanders’ remarks followed Israel’s retaliation for atrocities committed against Israelis by terror organization Hamas. The Israeli Defense Minister wants a “complete siege” of Gaza.
“We are fighting against human animals, and we act accordingly,” he said.
Since the initial Hamas attacks, Israel has decimated many areas of the Gaza Strip with airstrikes that delivered bombs, leveling buildings and killing hundreds.
Sanders condemned the Hamas attacks but also asked Israel to show restraint.
“We must also insist on restraint from Israeli forces attacking Gaza and work to secure U.N. humanitarian access. Let us not forget that half of the two million people in Gaza are children. Children and innocent people do not deserve to be punished for the acts of Hamas,” he said.
“Right now, the international community must focus on reducing humanitarian suffering and protecting innocent people on both sides of the conflict.”
