The Democrats are beginning to see the writing on the wall as Trump continues to crush Biden in early polling even as the former president battles multiple corruption lawsuits.
Former Obama Senior Adviser David Axelrod said Biden should drop out of the presidential race in 2024, making room for a president who won’t be in their mid-80s during the term and can compete with the disgraced former president who spends most of his time inside courtrooms.
On X (formerly Twitter), Axelrod admitted that changing course now could be risky, but there are “tremors of doubt” through the party that Democrats would lose the White House if Biden is the Democratic nominee.
“Only Joe Biden can make this decision,” Alexrod wrote in another post. “If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise, whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?”
Recently, a New York Times poll found Trump enjoys heavy leads in 5 battleground states.
The poll found Trump in the lead by as many as 11 percentage points in five states:
- Nevada: 52% vs. 41%
- Georgia: 49% vs. 43%
- Arizona: 49% vs. 44%
- Michigan: 48% vs. 43%
- Pennsylvania: 48% vs. 44%
While still very early in the election season, early polling has consistently given Trump a distinct advantage going into the 2024 election season, even as the former president fights four different legal battles nationwide.
The poll found most people believe Biden’s presidency has directly hurt them. Additionally, certain demographic groups that had supported Biden in 2020 seem less likely to support Biden now.
Young people only favor Biden by one percentage point. Hispanic support is also down to single digits. While women favor Biden, men overwhelmingly favor Trump by nearly 2x the margin.
Even Black voters in these battleground states are supporting Trump at levels we haven’t seen in a long time. A whopping 22% of black voters would pull the lever for Trump, the most support of any Republican candidate in modern times.
